Bacon and Ham are rarely MSG-free. Boar's Head Bacon is OK. Thumann's hot dogs are safe. Honey Baked Hams, sold in stores of this name, are MSG-free; but still contain nitrites and nitrates, which cause some people trouble.
Ice Cream: Even the best brands can contain Natural Flavors or Carrageenan. Every flavor has different ingredients, so read every label to be sure. Paul Newman's Own brand usually has no MSG, as well as Edy's Grand Ice Cream. (Edy's Sugar-Free, Yogurt, and Low-Fat may cause reactions.)
Cereals: If you keep to the basics, you're better off...Cheerios, Puffed Rice or Wheat. Kellogg's says their products contain no MSG, even if "natural flavors" appears on the label. Unflavored instant oatmeal is OK.
Salad Dressings: Paul Newman's and Marie's are MSG-free as are some gourmet dressings. Most common brands have MSG under one or more hidden names. (I use Paul Newman's Italian and add honey for a sweet-and-sour taste.)
Cake Mixes often contain MSG under one hidden name or another. The only "safe" cakes are made from scratch. Watch when you go to parties, where you don't know if what's being served is from a mix or truly homemade.
Sodas, Fruit Juices & Beer: Just about every soda on the market contains "Natural Flavors". Pepsi-Cola responded to an inquiry, saying they don't put MSG in their product. However, they did NOT mention "free glutamic acid" -- this may sound like splitting hairs, but free glutamic acid will give me a killer migraine every time! Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice is MSG-free, while the same brand Cranberry-Raspberry Juice has Natural Flavors. Gatorade and other "sports drinks" often contain enough glutamates to provoke a full-blown migraine in sensitive people. Many e-mails indicate that "Lite" Beers provoke MSG reactions -- possibly because the fermentation process releases free glutamic acid.
Soup: Most canned or frozen soups have MSG. Watch even those that say "No MSG" -- look for 'hidden names' on the label. If you need chicken broth to make a recipe, boil a chicken and add salt, pepper. To save time, I make a big pot of broth and put it in zip-lock bags in the freezer for later use in recipes. Campbell's (1-888-747-7687) will send you a list of products that contain no MSG. Be sure to specify the "hidden names" of MSG in your request!
Yogurt: I've never found MSG-free yogurt, but am told plain Brown Cow Yogurt is OK. The only Cottage Cheese I've found to be safe is Friendship Brand.
Candy and Gum: Most bubble gum and chewing gum contain MSG. Many candies have it under "whey" and "natural flavors". Reese's Peanut Butter cups are OK, as are some chocolates. Read those tiny labels!!
